Recession and Retrenchment
Posted November 11th, 2008 by SamanthaRecently, everyone is being emo for so many reasons: recession, business going slow, retrenchment on the rise, stock market slumped.
Malaysia was not affected as badly as the states, probably not yet, but next year definitely will not be good. Many companies who depend heavily on US client might be affected next quarter (2009), for many US companies start to pull out their purchasing. There’s nothing much we could do about the recession, but as an employee, we can do our part to help. Well, to also save ourselves from being retrenched.
If you are working in a company which might be hit badly by the recession, be part of it, feel the pain the company is going through. Inconsiderate staffs have no value towards the company. Here’s a few tips:
Save cost for the company - big money or small money is still money, saving 10 cents or 100 ringgit is also money to the company. Any project that you are working on should have cost saving in mind.
Show your commitment - If you have the habit of coming late to work or leaving the company on the dot, change it! You don’t want your company to see you as someone not dedicated and let them have an excuse to put you on the retrenchment consideration list.
Keep your team united - For managers, top management might be putting heavy pressure on you, but never show your temper tantrum towards your subordinate or team. Instead, motivate them to stay united, pull through the tough times together. It will be more rewarding, generating positive results.
People say it happens in a 10-year-cycle, whether you are just a fresh graduate or a senior manager, having the chance to go through what the company is going through now is a life experience to learn and grow. Take this as a challenge for you to be better in your career, and not just whine about it.
