Top interview question for fresh graduates: Tell me about your internship experience?
Posted December 26th, 2008 by SamanthaThis post is intended for parents, educator, or anyone who think that internship is not so important compared to your academic.
The truth is reverse! I know not all university provides internship program for their undergraduates. They either made it optional or they don’t have it at all. Many of my experience during seminar to assist these bunch of students with their resume is painful, and sad.
If you have attended my seminar before, you probably have heard about this:
“Joseph and John are unimates. They studied in the same course. After graduation, they applied to the same position as an accountant from the same company. Both of them have good grades, Joseph scored a CGPA is 3.56, while John scored slightly lower, 3.54, both of them have not undergo any form of internship.”
If I were to put you in the employer’s shoe, with the information you have, you can only invite one of them for interview, who would you choose?
The answer is pretty clear, you would call Joseph to come for an interview because his CGPA is slightly higher.
Resume without any form of experience is just like your result slip and nothing more. The only indicator to show that you are better would be your CGPA, nothing else! What if you are like John, you are not a high flyer in your grades? What else can you write in your resume to tell them that you are better?
Other than writing about your final year project, or your assignments, that’s about it. So, if you have the option to go for a short internship, even without pay, go for it. To those undergraduates who don’t have an internship program in their course, do it during your short holiday.
Parents who insist their child to complete their degree ASAP, you should LET THEM GO ON AN INTERNSHIP program.
Employers prefer street-smart than plain book-smart. Employers like students who has practical training or industrial related training. When it comes to hiring, they won’t just buy good grades.
